For centuries, Sexuality and Gender were considered a binary concept i.e it had only two variables. Any and every individual was categorised in either of the two. A man was expected to be interested only in women while a woman was supposed to only like a man. Over the decades there have some major discussions and positive changes to say the least. One of these major changes involves acceptance with the LGBTQ+ Community. In the past, A person with different sexual preferences, themself, treated it as a flaw. More people are beginning to accept their true sexuality and take pride in being a member of the LGBTQ+ Community.
What is LGBTQ+ Community?
LGBTQIA+ Community is a term for a group of people who don’t associate themselves fully to any one gender/ sexuality. It stands for Lesbian,Gay,Bisexual,Transgender and queer ( a person still questioning his gender). There are around 57 Genders in the world.
Why Should We Discuss About The LGBTQ+ Community?
There is a huge need to discuss the future of the LGBTQ+ community, mainly because even after decades, this community still faces a massive number of challenges in their day-to-day lives. Here are some of the major challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ :
Overlooked and Neglected:
Society functions on majority, if most people agree on one opinion/belief, it often becomes the norm and people who believe something different are marginalized by the society. Neglected Groups have relatively little access to basic resources and because of societal disapproval, members of LGBTQ+ are often on the receiving end of negative public stance.
Mental And Physical Harassment:
According to several studies done by GLSEN ( a network for the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight
Education) concluded that 9 out of 10 LGBTQ+ students go through mental harassment. Out of these students, 31% missed classes and took days off because they felt unsafe. Not only mental but they also face physical abuse. Statistics shows that approximately 30% of LGBT Youth have been physically abused by families because of their sexual preferences and gender expression.
An estimate of 35% LGBTQ+ Youth are living in the streets of New York because they were either not accepted or were thrown out for being a member of this community. This population of youth often engage in drug abuse, criminal activity and often develop serious mental disorders. Moreover, data shows that LGBTQ+ teens are 6 times more likely to face depression and 8 times more likely to attempt suicide.
What Is Pride Month 2021?
LGBTQ+ Pride month is a period dedicated to honour the 1969 uprising in manhattan. This uprising was a major event for the Gay Liberation Movement in the US. The first pride march was held in New york, 1970. Since then it is carried out every year in the month of June. It is celebrated with Parades, ,parties ,workshops ,concerts, etc. and millions of people from all over the World come to be a part of this. Apart from the celebrations, a memorial is also held to commemorate people who lost their lives due to HIV/AIDS, Hate crimes, Harassment and Abuse. For 50 years, people have gathered here to demonstrate for equal human rights.
We are living in 2021 and people still have a negative view of all other genders apart from Man or Woman. But it’s important to stand against these notions of society because this is not a disease nor is it a phase, it’s an individual’s character and should be treated like one. Our generation has the power to be the change when it comes to making things right and fighting for rights and safety irrespective of sexuality, gender, race, and caste.
