World environment day is celebrated by the United Nations on June 5th annually. The World Environment day was first observed in 1972, when the UN assembly had called stockholm conference to discuss the issues about the World’s environment. Since 1974, the United Nations has been observing June 5th as the World’s Environment day to create worldwide awareness about environmental protection. In 1974 , the theme of first World’s Environment day was “Only One Earth”.The theme of World Environment Day 2021 is “Ecosystem Restoration”. In 1987, the UN decided to rotate the host country for the celebration of this day.Pakistan will be the global host in 2021 in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP). The country marks the completion of planting 1 billion trees as a part of its ambitious 10 billion campaign. The United Nations Environment Programme said, “This theme aims to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean”.
Every humans are exploiting the ecosystem on their daily basis. Over the last century, we destroyed half of the wetlands and for every three seconds ,the earth losses enough forest to cover a football pitch.Almost 50% of the world coral reefs were destroyed and 90% of them will be destroyed in 2050, even if the global warming is limited to an increase of 1.5 degrees celsius. According to the Central Pollution Control Board(CPCB), India generates an estimated 26,000 tonnes of plastic a day, out of which more than 10,000 tonnes remain uncollected which ends up in seas and oceans ,harming aquatic life. According to Greenpeace , every year million of trees are chopped to make chopsticks. Lakes and coastlines are polluted by poor waste management or by any industrial accident.
This day had gained a significance on Ecosystem Restoration , a mission to halt, prevent and reverse the degradation of ecosystems around the planet.Ecosystem Restoration means recovery of ecosystem which has been destroyed and conserving the ecosystem. Restoration can happen in many ways including planting trees or removing the pressure from the environment so that the nature can recover on its own. Restoration can be done by any individual, government, development agencies to business and communities.
This World Environment Day will kick off the UN decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of the mountains to the depth of the sea. To make this mission successful by 2030,it would co-led by various UN agencies including United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO), and the World Health Organisation(WHO). On the occasion of World Environment day 2021, Indian Railways has announced that they have took initiatives to save the nature. The national transporter had said that Indian Railways is working in a mission to become the World largest green railways and it is moving towards a ‘net zero carbon emitter’before 2030. It includes electrification, renewable energy usage and eco-friendly solutions. This day is also celebrated by government, celebrities, business and citizens to make our environment to a better one. It is also our duty to preserve our environment because environment is not only for humans ,it is also for all the living beings.
