What is the difference between human and humane? You are human. Hopefully you act humane.”Human” signifies being a member of the mammalian class of Homo sapiens as opposed to other members of the animal (not just mammal) and plant world.”Humane” signifies a certain “ethical” quality of the way you conduct yourself as a human being.
Human is defined as a living organism who is a vertebrate. It implies human just means about living individual without knowing about his/her inner self.Humane is defined by showing kindness and empathy among each others. In some contexts there isn’t much which shows our optimism about the essential good of humans.
We expect humans to be humane. Unlike other species, we have a choice to be predatory and cruel or to be kindly and helpful to our neighbor. The latter is being humane, looking out for the poor the vulnerable and deprived especially. If someone shows indifference to the plights of others we might say in exasperation, “Are you a human being or some kind of monster?” Notice that extreme selfishness and self-absorption is called a disease—psych-pathy. The same with cold indifference to other people, sociopathy. We are a social species. Other social species care for each other so we expect a human who isn’t is dysfunctional. And we often find that indeed this is the case in more ways than we can observe looking at behavior.
Humane societies are names given groups trying to lobby for better care of animals. Many provide it too. Animals are not a part of our species. So we assume that humans my not give a damn about them. We find many cases of abusing pets, virtually torturing farm animals and animals skinned alive in slaughterhouses. Here groups of humans realizing the suffering animals can undergo, seeing the emotional harms done to them, try to get us to extend our concern. That’s what “humanity” is, or more accurately, humaneness.
How well can you define the difference between human being and being human?Who are human beings and what is being human? What is the difference between humanity and humane?
Being human is simply what we are. Being humane is a way a human can act.Every person is a human. Every one of us.If you care about being humane, and about humane treatment, it means you are not only focusing on your own humanity. It means you recognize the humanity that is definitely also present in people around you. It means you want to treat other people the way you want to be treated. Like humans. Treated well. Treated with respect. Treated equally. Treated with care. It probably means that you want that too, from other people reciprocally.Developing a methodology takes time because when you realize it’s not that way, if you care, you’ll get mad. But you can’t fix problems like that with anger. Maybe with some help from passion for your work.
But that’s definitely not the same thing. It’s only a little later after seeing , after getting angry, if you want to solve problems that you can use empathy ( and as a colleague recently reminded me, empathy’s less emotionally driven cousin, compassion) to solve them. The goal is what matters, and we are all flawed people. Humans. If you want to successfully be humane you’ll probably be more focused on that and less on perfection and how you look while you get to your solutions.Perfection is not at all Human and isn’t necessary to be humane.
